Avi Lewis Nominated as Candidate for MP
On August 24th, 2024 members of the Vancouver Centre NDP overwhelmingly endorsed Avi Lewis as the local candidate for MP.
Since I ran for office in 2021, the connected crises we face have only deepened. The cost of housing, food, and other necessities is out of control. Wildfires rage and floodwaters mount as the climate unravels. Our personal devices have become portals to horror as they livestream 24/7 images of the genocide in Gaza. Healthcare is being privatized, public transit is buckling, and young people struggle with anxiety over a future that looks more and more grim.
Meanwhile, the 1% pop champagne: corporate profits smash records year after year, and Liberal and Conservative governments across the country keep passing policies that shovel wealth upwards.
I believe we can live in a society built on a foundation of care and connection. Where rent is reasonable, price gouging is illegal, and public services like healthcare and transportation are fully funded and functional. A society where work doesn’t suck and salaries go up faster than the cost of living. A society in which human freedoms flourish and nature is able to heal.
That better world is possible, but to win it we have to fight for it. We have to come together across all our differences. We have to acknowledge the legitimate rage driving the rise of rightwing populism. We have to offer in its place a struggle powered by compassion, deep belonging, and an unwavering commitment to justice, community, and solidarity.
That’s why I’m running. Because organizing for change is the most fulfilling work I’ve ever done. It's how we put hope before fear, and put the needs of the many before greed for the money.
