What’s Happening:
A Shock Doctrine Playbook

Twenty years ago, my wife Naomi Klein came across a quote that would form the foundation of The Shock Doctrine. That book explains how elites exploit shocks like wars, coups, natural disasters, and economic crises (like today’s!) to impose policies that would never fly in normal times.

The quote was from Milton Friedman, the grandfather of pro-corporate right-wing economics—arguably the architect of today’s hyper-inequality.

“Only a crisis - actual or perceived - produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around.”
– Milton Friedman

The ideas that are lying around.

Elites seize shocks, when our world is suddenly in a state of exception, to turbo-charge policies that benefit the few and hurt the rest of us. Right on cue, Canada’s establishment is suddenly pushing:

  • ❌ New oil and gas pipelines
  • ❌ Increased military spending and integration
  • ❌ Deporting migrant workers
  • ❌ A corporate wish list of big industrial projects

But here’s the thing: we have our own ideas lying around. Policies that will:

  • ✅ Combat inequality
  • ✅ Make life more affordable for working people and seniors
  • ✅ Tackle the climate emergency—floods, fires, and heat waves
  • ✅ Build an economy rooted in care and repair—not corporate greed

That’s what our campaign is fighting for right now.

Will you chip in today? Every dollar fuels this fight. Every door knock brings us closer to victory. Every conversation sparks hope.
