The Vancouver Centre NDP is honoured today to share this message from Avi's cherished mentor, the renowned environmentalist David Suzuki. David is a scientist, broadcaster, author and co-founder of the David Suzuki Foundation. He became familiar to audiences worldwide as host of CBC TV’s The Nature of Things and he has written or co-authored more than 50 books.
Dear friends –
Although you might know me from talking about big environmental issues, what you might not know is that my academic study in genetics has actually been focused on things that are pretty small: fruit flies.I spent years and years carefully examining the smallest details related to these tiny creatures not because they are annoying in the kitchen but because understanding these details can help us all better understand the world we share and how we are all connected to the web of life.
That kind of understanding is more important now than ever as we face survival-threatening emergencies such as climate change and biodiversity loss and Canada's government under both Liberals and Conservatives continue to not do nearly enough.
I have admired Avi Lewis since he was a young man because of his way with words and his ability to communicate important topics and connects with people. These were skills that seemed to come so naturally to him and he inspired me as a broadcaster and public speaker. As I scientist, I do of course believe in heredity - though Avi inherited both great nature and nurture from his father and mother, two of the most widely celebrated orators and authors in the country. But even surrounded by brilliant minds, Avi's voice has always been very much his own.
As I have gotten to know Avi more closely over the years I have realized that we share this interest in understanding the little details that can really make a big difference. He has a drive and determination to understand issues and people inside and out and seems driven more than anything to see real meaningful solutions become a reality.
He has been a courageous investigative journalist and documentarian and a fantastic community organizer bringing a wide range of people together to participate in co-creating the world we know we need in order to survive the challenges we face.
I am thrilled to support my friend Avi Lewis, we need Avi in Parliament as we face momentous social and environmental challenges. Please join me in doing whatever you can to help make this a reality.
Yours truly,
David Suzuki
